Ensure the magnetic drill is completely powered off. Usually, the metal slug ejects automatically via the spring-loaded pilot pin. If a slug is stuck, gently tap the side of the cutter or use pliers to pull it out. Never use a hard steel tool to pry inside the cutter, as this will damage the precision-ground inner cutting edges and reduce tool life.

A standard twist drill cuts the entire hole into small metal chips, which requires high horsepower and more time. An annular cutter only cuts the outer periphery of the hole, leaving a solid metal slug in the center. This makes annular cutters 3 to 4 times faster, cleaner, and far more energy-efficient, especially for large-diameter holes in heavy industry.

The majority of modern annular cutters feature a standard 3/4 inch (19.05mm) Weldon shank or a Universal shank with flat sides, making them compatible with almost all standard magnetic drill presses globally. HSS (High-Speed Steel) cutters are highly durable, cost-effective, and ideal for standard structural steel. They can be re-sharpened. Yes, but they cannot be chucked directly like a standard twist drill. You must use an annular cutter arbor adapter (typically with a Morse Taper) to securely connect the cutter to the drill press spindle. Absolute stability and tight clamping of the workpiece are strictly required to prevent the teeth from chipping.

HSS annular cutters can be re-sharpened, but it requires specialized tool-grinding machinery to maintain the complex, alternating tooth geometry. TCT cutters generally cannot be easily re-sharpened once the carbide tips wear out.
