Will a Diamond Blade Cut Granite?

Yes, granite requires a specialized high-density diamond blade due to its high quartz content and exceptional hardness. The metal matrix bonding the diamond grits must be relatively soft. This design allows the matrix to wear away at a controlled rate, constantly exposing fresh, sharp diamond particles to grind through the quartz crystalline structure without polishing the tool smooth.

For fabrication shops, high-speed bridge saws equipped with wet-cutting continuous or narrow-segment diamond blades are best. For field modifications, heavy-duty wet angle grinders or specialized track saws ensure straight lines and clean edges. Every structural spindle must maintain perfect alignment to prevent side-wear on the blade core.

Granite fabrication must be done wet to achieve commercial-grade results. Granite chips easily under thermal stress; constant water flow cools the cutting zone, prevents micro-cracking along the cut line, and extends the diamond tool’s lifespan by clearing away the highly abrasive granite slurry immediately.

The best technique is step cutting combined with steady forward movement. Instead of trying to cut through a 3cm slab in a single pass, operators should make multiple shallow passes (roughly 5-10mm deep per pass). This method minimizes heat buildup, prevents the diamond blade from wandering, and protects the integrity of the finished edges.

After the initial cut, the exposed profile must be finished using diamond polishing pads ranging from 50-grit for aggressive shaping up to 3000-grit for a high-gloss finish. To maintain perfectly flat surfaces across seams, fabricators use specialized rigid backer plates attached to low-speed wet polishers.

For cutting intricate sink cutouts or tight radiuses in granite tiles, a brazed diamond grit jigsaw blade is required. Unlike standard teeth that snap, the edge of a diamond jigsaw blade is completely covered in diamond particles, allowing it to cut through omnidirectional abrasive action under constant water cooling.
