Fully Ground HSS M2 Drill Bits

A fully ground drill bit is manufactured using a precision grinding process where the entire tool—including the flutes and the cutting point—is ground from a solid, heat-treated steel blank. This differs from "roll-forged" bits, which are heated and twisted into shape. Fully ground bits offer significantly higher dimensional accuracy, a smoother surface finish for better chip evacuation, and a consistently sharper cutting edge that meets strict industrial tolerances.

M2 is the international designation for a tungsten-molybdenum series High-Speed Steel (HSS). It is widely considered the "standard" or "workhorse" grade for professional metalworking worldwide. The "M" stands for Molybdenum, which provides the bit with excellent wear resistance and toughness. The primary difference lies in their alloy composition and heat resistance:  • HSS M2: Contains tungsten and molybdenum, offering high toughness and a very sharp edge. It is perfect for general-purpose drilling in carbon steel, iron, and wood.  • HSS M35: Includes 5% Cobalt. The addition of cobalt increases the bit's "red hardness," allowing it to cut through tougher materials like stainless steel without dulling under extreme friction.  • Hardness: While both can be maintained at 63 HRC+, M35 remains stable at much higher operating temperatures than M2. 

HSS M2 is a high-carbon tool steel alloyed with Tungsten (W), Molybdenum (Mo), Chromium (Cr), and Vanadium (V). This combination creates a metallurgical structure that balances hardness, toughness, and wear resistance. Because of its versatility and ability to hold a keen edge even after resharpening, M2 is the preferred material for high-quality twist drills, taps, and milling cutters used in heavy-duty manufacturing.
