Industrial HSS Drill Bits

Yes, but it depends on the grade of HSS and the type of stainless steel. For soft or thin-gauge stainless steel, a standard fully ground M2 bit can be effective. However, for industrial-grade 304 or 316 stainless steel, we recommend HSS bits with 63 HRC or higher hardness or those alloyed with cobalt. Using proper lubrication and a slow RPM is essential to prevent the stainless steel from work-hardening and damaging the bit's cutting edge.

HSS stands for High-Speed Steel, a specialized carbon steel alloyed with elements like tungsten, molybdenum, and chromium. The "High-Speed" designation refers to its ability to maintain a sharp cutting edge and structural integrity even when generating significant friction and heat. At Tenyu Tool, our HSS products are precision-tempered to ensure a Rockwell hardness of 63 HRC or higher, allowing for faster drilling speeds than traditional high-carbon steels. 

While highly versatile, HSS has specific limitations in professional environments:  Heat Threshold: Basic HSS grades can lose their "temper" (hardness) if exposed to extreme, sustained heat without coolant.  Brittleness at High Hardness: To maintain a 63 HRC+ edge, the bit becomes less flexible than soft steel, meaning it can snap if subjected to sudden lateral shocks.  Hardness Ceiling: HSS is not suitable for drilling materials that are already heat-treated to extreme hardness levels, where solid carbide would be the required alternative.

The lifespan of an HSS drill bit is significantly longer than standard bits, provided it maintains its 63 HRC or higher hardness through quality manufacturing. A premium HSS bit can drill hundreds of holes in mild steel and, unlike many other tools, can be resharpened multiple times. This ability to restore the cutting edge makes HSS a highly sustainable and cost-effective choice for long-term B2B industrial operations.

This depends on your workpiece material:  • Standard HSS (63 HRC+): Better for general-purpose tasks involving iron, mild steel, aluminum, and wood. It is more economical and offers excellent toughness.  • Cobalt Drill Bits (M35/M42): Better for "tough" metals like stainless steel or cast iron. The addition of cobalt increases the bit's heat resistance, allowing it to stay sharp in high-friction environments where standard HSS might fail

This is a choice between durability and surface performance:  Titanium-Coated Bits: These are HSS bits (with a 63 HRC+ core) coated with Titanium Nitride (TiN). The coating reduces friction and heat, allowing for faster speeds. However, once the coating wears off or the bit is sharpened, it performs like a standard HSS bit.  Standard HSS: Better for users who prioritize the ability to resharpen their tools frequently while maintaining consistent metallurgical performance throughout the entire body of the tool.
